EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES OF THE UNIVESITY

The educational activity of the University complies with the state standard educational-professional programs, educational qualification characteristics, curricula, and programs developed and approved by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine.

Educational work at the University is organized in accordance with the order of the Ministry of Education of Ukraine No. 161 dated 02.06.93, and the Law of Ukraine "On Education". It is conducted according to the working curricula and programs, and curricula of the educational process.

The University utilizes a cross-cutting program of integration of basic, vocational and clinical disciplines with disciplines of traditional and non-traditional medicine covering the entire educational period.

 It contributes to the training of brand new competitive profiled specialists of a new type, which can combine the knowledge and skills of classical, traditional and non-traditional medicine in their practice.

In its educational process, scientific and medical work, EMU uses its own material base, library with reading room. Lectures, seminars and practical classes on reflexology, homeopathy, pharmacognosy, and phytotherapy, manual therapy are held in thematic classes.

In addition to state exams, in the process of study, since 1999, students of EMU annually take the State Licensed Integrated Exams (KROK-1, KROK-2), which are carried out by the Center for Testing Professional Competence at the Ministry of Health of Ukraine in accordance with the international standards.

The University employs 21 doctors and 63 candidates of science, who provide a high level of the educational process. Much attention is paid to the deepening of knowledge in the field of traditional and non-traditional medicine both among teachers and students. For the purpose of high-quality and effective training in practical classes, teachers work with students in small groups or individually. This allows students to master practical skills and improve the quality of student training at the university.

Even under difficult economic conditions in Ukraine, the University has been training specialists with higher medical education at the level of state higher educational institutions for more than 20 years.

The first experience of graduates with additional knowledge of traditional and non-traditional medicine shows that currently general practitioners who have simple, affordable and non-invasive tools for diagnosis, prevention and treatment (including traditional medicine) are most needed in rural areas, where there is a lack of quality specialists, equipment and medicines. Also, doctors of this profile are in high demand in private clinics in cities and districts not only in our region, but throughout the country.

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY OF EMU

In addition to educational work, the European Medical University takes an active part in scientific work.

The main scientific directions are the following:

1. Thorough study and substantiation of the experience of traditional and alternative medicine in its main areas (phyto-, aromatherapy, homeopathy, reflexology, chiropractic) from the standpoint of modern science;

2. Development of recommendations that promote health of the population and reduce the effects of adverse environmental effects on the human body, including foods with dietary, therapeutic and therapeutic properties;

3. The use of traditional medicine in the rehabilitation of athletes who perform significant physical activity.

The result of scientific activity of the EMU team are hundreds of scientific articles, textbooks and monographs, patents and copyright certificates. Scientists of EMU constantly discuss their work at domestic and international scientific-practical conferences, congresses, symposia, etc., and cover them on the pages of domestic and foreign scientific publications (collections of scientific papers, journals, monographs, guidelines, etc.).

THERAPEUTIC WORK

Therapeutic work and teaching of clinical disciplines in the EMU is carried out on the clinical bases of regional and city hospitals, as well as the military hospital. In its own counseling and diagnostic center, students and teachers are closely monitored for the health of students and teachers and carry out the necessary treatment and prevention measures. In addition, students and teachers of EMU can strengthen their health in a sports and training complex with modern sports equipment.

TRADITIONAL MEDICINE IN UKRAINE AND WORLDWIDE

Traditional or complementary medicine combines historically formed knowledge passed down from generation to generation and empirical experience and skills in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases. This knowledge has been accumulated for millennia and has now been confirmed by evidence-based medicine. Traditional medicine includes pharmacognosy, phytotherapy, acupuncture, homeopathy, chiropractic, biorhythmology, apitherapy, oriental health systems (Gypsies, Thais-zi-quan) and others.

These areas require significant funding, but they can be used in medical facilities with a shortage of diagnostic and medical equipment and medicines. European Medical University is engaged in in-depth study of these areas. For comparison: there are 115 such institutions in the People's Republic of China and only 2 in Ukraine.

The importance and necessity of the development of traditional and non-traditional medicine have been recognized at the state level. In 2002, the Ministry of Health of Ukraine adopted a law envisaging the introduction of traditional and alternative medicine specialists into the list of positions in medical and health care institutions.

Traditional and non-traditional medicine has been used for centuries, but these techniques are becoming more and more relevant. As per data provided by Phytotherapy journal a large number of developed countries uses traditional medicine: Canada – 70%, Germany  73%, France – 49%, Australia  48%, the United States  31%, Belgium – 31%.
